The Master Equation: Steepness & Hull Length

When checking our Waves page, pay close attention to the relationship between Swell Height and Swell Interval (Period in seconds).

  • Long-Period Groundswell (13–18+ seconds): The distance between wave crests is vast. Even a large 6-to-8-foot swell rolls smoothly underneath most hulls with minimal impact.
  • Short-Period Wind Chop (5–8 seconds): The distance between crests is very short. Waves stand up steep and sharp (“square waves”). When short-period wave intervals match or closely line up with your hull length, your vessel falls into the trough between waves, resulting in severe pounding, wet rides, or loss of steering control.

Boat Size & Hull Configuration Comparison (Up to 65 Feet)

1. Small Skiffs & Center Consoles (16′ to 22′)

  • Common Configurations: Single-engine aluminum skiffs, bay boats, deep-V or modified-V center consoles, small dual-consoles.
  • Hull Behavior: These light, open-cockpit vessels ride on top of the water rather than slicing through it. They are susceptible to wind drift, spray, and rapid pitching in short chops.

  • Common Configurations: Single or twin-engine deep-V center consoles, walkaround cuddy cabins, express fish boats.

  • Common Configurations: Twin-engine express cruisers, sedan bridges, large twin-hull catamarans, lobster/downeast style boats.
  • Hull Behavior: Heavy displacement or semi-displacement hulls with wide beams offer high initial stability. Power catamarans in this class excel in head-seas, while heavy monohulls absorb chop smoothly.
  • Comfort Limit: 4 to 5 ft seas.

4. Mid-Range Convertible Sportfishers & Motor Yachts (39′ to 50′)

  • Common Configurations: Twin-diesel flybridge convertibles, aft-cabin motor yachts, trawlers, large express sportfishers.
  • Hull Behavior: Substantial displacement mass, deep forefoots, and wide beams allow these vessels to punch through steep coastal chop effortlessly. Trawlers and semi-displacement hulls handle seas comfortably at displacement speeds (8–10 knots) but can experience pronounced rolling in beam seas without stabilizers.
  • Comfort Limit: 5 to 7 ft seas.
  • Dangerous Sea States: Severe gale-force conditions; heavy 8+ ft short-period wind waves; extreme gale chop off Point Conception or outer Channel Island banks.
